Motivation hacks to go to the gym / fitness / weight training.
Once you’ve updated your knowledge and understand that all able adults should do strength training, how do you stay motivated?
Hack 1: Understand the Benefits
Realize that the benefits of strength training go far beyond what most people think or what we were taught as kids. Update your knowledge, surround yourself with people who’ve done the same.
The benefits aren’t just physical appearance. Strength training improves cognitive abilities, boosts metabolism, and can even bring positive changes to your DNA.
Hack 2: Guilt as Leverage
If a regular gym session usually takes 45 to 75 minutes, remind yourself that just 20 minutes is already way better than skipping it.
It removes the pressure of “I have to stay for an hour.”
Imagine if you had done 20 minutes of strength training a day, 5 days a week, for your whole adult life – you’d be in incredible shape.
Better to have a mix like 20min + 60min + 10min + 50min + 30min than nothing at all and fall into a guilt-driven cycle of inaction.
Hack 3: The More You Go, the More You Like It
Just like quitting sugar becomes a habit, going to the gym regularly becomes enjoyable. The more you go, the more it becomes part of your life and the more you appreciate the physical and mental benefits. Soon, skipping a session feels like something’s missing – the gym becomes essential to your routine, and it’s healthy.
Hack 4: Time Optimization
Instead of wasting 20 minutes thinking “Should I go or not?”, just go – that’s 20 minutes saved.
Minimize travel time as much as possible: ideally 3 minutes, or as short as you can manage. A daily session already takes time – travel time adds up quickly.
Optimize warm-up, cool-down, and exercises to avoid wasting time.
Don’t take more rest than needed between sets (distractions, phone, daydreaming, chatting…).
Optimize your schedule: for example, shower right after the gym – kill two birds with one stone.
Same for meals: have lunch right after your session, since you need protein after working out – again, kill two birds with one stone.
Hack 5: Surround Yourself
Go with a friend, partner, or make friends there – it’s easier and often more enjoyable, especially at the beginning or when motivation dips.
