Song lyrics have become simpler, more repetitive, and more negative over the last five decades
A comprehensive study has found that song lyrics in Western popular music have become simpler, more repetitive, and more negative over the last five decades. The analysis, which examined over 353,000 English-language songs, revealed a decline in vocabulary richness, structural complexity, and readability. At the same time, lyrics have increasingly focused on personal themes and negative emotions. These trends were consistent across multiple genres, including pop, rock, rap, R&B, and country. The study also highlighted shifts in listener engagement, with preferences varying significantly by genre and the age of the music.

A study found modern song lyrics are becoming simpler, more repetitive, angrier, and more self-centered. The study analyzed lyrics from popular songs over the past decades and observed a trend towards increased negativity, narcissism, and a focus on the self. This shift is thought to reflect broader societal changes, including the rise of social media and cultural shifts towards individualism.
