Worldcoin, the identity project backed by Sam Altman, is building a global system to prove a user is a real person online without exposing who they are. The company says this proof of personhood could also support future plans like universal basic income, once a trustworthy network is large enough. It has introduced Face Auth, a phone based 1:1 face check that confirms the person using a World ID is the same person who verified at an orb.
At enrollment, the orb photographs a person’s eyes and face to generate an iris code, a numerical pattern that is stable over time and more complex than fingerprints or faces. The raw photos are sent back encrypted to the user’s device, not kept by the company by default. The iris code itself is split into encrypted pieces and stored across separate parties using secure multi party computation, so no single party can reconstruct it.
World ID can be used as a private sign in that proves “a unique human” to partner apps. Integrations and developer tooling exist through Okta’s Auth0 and community apps for services like Reddit, Discord, Shopify, Telegram and others. These links aim to help services filter bots while keeping user data minimal.
Regulators are closely watching the project. In 2024, Portugal’s data watchdog ordered Worldcoin to pause biometric collection for 90 days. In December 2024, the Bavarian data protection authority issued measures that include erasure of iris codes stored in the EU context and changes to deletion rights. Kenya first suspended local activity in 2023, then police dropped an investigation in June 2024, clearing a path to resume. These decisions show that privacy controls and data rights will shape how and where the system operates.
The role of this identity layer in basic income remains open. Company leaders describe the goal as building a standard infrastructure for trusted digital interactions first, then exploring how that network might distribute benefits fairly.
