A Belgian company called Gablok has turned the idea of building-block toys into a real-world construction system. Inventor Gabriel Lakatos patented the concept in 2018 and founded the firm the following year. The kit contains eight lightweight wooden elements, the main ones being insulated blocks filled with expanded polystyrene (EPS). These blocks are stacked—without glue or mortar—to create the load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls of a house.
Because every project is modelled in 3-D before delivery, clients receive a precise plan showing where each piece goes. On site, a small team equipped with nothing more than a ladder and a screwdriver can erect the weather-tight shell of a 100 m² house in about a week, sometimes as little as six days.
The EPS-filled blocks give the structure its thermal performance, while the OSB (oriented-strand board) outer skins add strength. Gablok reports a whole-wall thermal conductivity of 0.15 W/m²·K, which meets Belgium’s “excellent” energy rating and keeps heating needs low.
Once the walls are up, builders add a roof, run wiring and plumbing in the service cavity left between the wall battens, then finish the exterior with any cladding they choose. The off-site prefabrication minimises waste, reduces construction noise and cuts CO₂ emissions by eliminating cement and on-site drying time.
Although pricing depends on design, independent estimates suggest a finished cost of roughly USD 100–150 per square foot—up to 30 percent below typical masonry construction—and more than 200 Gablok projects are already standing in Belgium, France and Germany.
In short, Gablok offers self-builders a fast, low-waste and energy-efficient way to put up a personalised timber home without advanced skills.
