Tesla used Optimus to energize a flashy launch and to frame the company as an AI and robotics leader, yet the most eye catching robot moments relied on human control, not full autonomy.
At Tesla’s “We, Robot” event in Los Angeles, the company let multiple Optimus humanoid robots walk among guests during the reveal of its new robotaxi and a larger Robovan. A demo video showed Optimus doing simple home tasks like bringing in a package and watering plants, while the live robots mostly waved, handed out small items, and posed with attendees.
Elon Musk told the audience that Optimus would one day “walk amongst you,” serve drinks, and do many everyday jobs. He suggested a long term price in the tens of thousands of dollars.
Follow up reporting after the event clarified that many of the crowd interactions were not autonomous. Multiple outlets reported the robots were teleoperated, with a human providing voice and control for much of what people saw, while on board systems handled basic locomotion.
Beyond the showpiece robots, Tesla also introduced its two seat “Cybercab” robotaxi and a Robovan concept, and set expectations for production in the coming years. Independent coverage stressed that large regulatory and technical hurdles remain before wide robotaxi service or household humanoid robots are ready.
